All the substances around you have different shapes, sizes and textures. Everything in the universe is made up of matter . The air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, a pen with which we write, the book we read, everything is made up of matter.  MATTER It is a substance which occupies space and has mass. Air, Earth,Fire,Sky and Water are five basic elements. The ‘ Panch tatva ‘ according to the earlier Indian philosopher , everything living and non-living is made up of these five basic elements. CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER  Modern day scientists have classified mattern in the following two ways:- The physical classification based on physical properties of matter The chemical classification based on the chemical composition of matter. CHARACTERISTICS OF PARTICLES OF MATTER The particles of matter are made from small particles.  Particles of matter have spaces between them.  Particles of matter are continuously moving.  Particles of matter attract each other.
